Happy New Year!

It's that time of the year.  As the number on the calendar changes, we reflect back on the year past.  And what a year it has been here at Horse Haven!  The arrival of Sylvester and Tweedy this morning brings the total number of horses we cared for in 2013 to 117.  It's a big number but it only tells part of the story.  117 horses means 117 stories of neglect and subsequent rescue, 117 nickers at feeding time, 117 mouths munching hay and enjoying turnout in our pastures.  It also means 117 Coggins tests drawn, 117 vaccinations and de-wormers administered, 117 farrier appointments.  But all the work and all the expenses are forgotten when we see horses like Sam, much loved by Clare, his person.

Sam was one of 20 horses rescued in a neighboring county 18 months ago. Clare adopted him a little over a year ago. The pair is working on their jumping and trail challenge skills. It's stories like this that keep us going,  month after month, year after year.  And it's your financial support that enables us to help horses in need with much needed care. You make it possible for horses like Sam to find their happy ending.  Your donation of $10, $20 of $50 can make a big difference.

Happy New Year! May it bring many happy endings to the horses at Horse Haven!

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...12 tubes of wormer

Did you know that it is a bad idea to deworm a wormy horse with a full dose of heavy duty dewormer? By killing all the parasites at one time, you may cause a big ball of dead worms that can obstruct the horse’s intestine. When horses arrive at Horse Haven, we treat parasites carefully by administering a couple of half doses over two days before giving a full dose of a different class of dewormer several days later. This way the worms die off in stages and not all at once. This also is less stressful on a horse that is already stressed by neglect.
Won’t you help us rid needy horses of parasites by donating $20 or $30 towards our “Deworming” fund? Twinkie, the Horse Haven mascot, says “Thank you” for keeping his new friends worm free.

Donating is easy. You can go to our website at www.horsehaventn.org and click on the pay pal button, or you can mail a check to Horse Haven of TN, PO Box 22841, Knoxville TN 37933. Thank you and Merry Christmas from the horses, volunteers and staff at Horse Haven of Tennessee!

On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me....11 decent lead ropes

Lead ropes are such a basic tool, yet so very important when handling horses. With 51 horses currently in the care of Horse Haven, we have a lot of lead ropes. However, when we get called on a large case confiscation, our stash quickly gets depleted. We may be picking up 5, 10 or even 30 horses and have to come up with halters and leads for each on short notice. Won’t you help us help horses in need by donating $5, $10 or $20 towards the purchase of new lead ropes with regular snaps? Bull snaps are not a good option when handling horses without a history. Dora, who is patiently awaiting adoption, appreciates your help!

On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me....10ft of hose

Horse Haven is currently located on leased property in West Knoxville. We are so very grateful for the free lease on this wonderful facility but it limits us on installing certain necessities that would make life easier. Such as water hook ups in every turn out area. Instead we use hoses. 2000 feet of hose, enough to reach every paddock and water trough on the property. Won’t you please help us keep our water troughs full by donating $20 or $30 dollars towards updating some of our hoses? Horses like Sapphire awaiting her forever home will appreciate your help.
